Jesse’s Place

Jesse’s Place is our soon to be operational young adult shelter. Jesse was a special young man who stayed at Camp Hope and we were blessed to get to know him. We will be naming our young adult shelter after him and we are seeking donations in his honor.
The following is an expert of a letter from Jesse’s parents explaining how special Jesse was and what Camp Hope has meant to their whole family.

By Susanna Nickens: Our Jesse was truly a light in this world. He was smart, talented, athletic, kind, beautiful, and hilarious. He also struggled with Mental Illness. He was diagnosed with Bipolar when he was a senior in high school. When Jesse was manic, he also struggled with homelessness. He would leave our home and walk the streets for days, even weeks. It was terrifying. One place he found peace and understanding, was one of our local homeless shelters- Camp Hope. Camp Hope is an incredible place. It’s a low barrier shelter that accepts all people- and their pets. All the volunteers are trained in trauma informed care. I could go on for days. We didn’t visit the camp or meet the director, Mike Kay, until Jesse passed away. I immediately understood why Jesse felt safe there. Last Wednesday, Willis and I had the opportunity to visit the soon to be dedicated Young Adult shelter, Jesse’s Place. It will house 30 young adults between the ages of 18-24. They provide case management for those dealing with Dual Diagnosis. They have made arrangements for local agencies to provide services for residents on site.
